What’s an Almostronaut?

al·mos·tro·naut
noun

a person who is almost trained to almost travel in a spacecraft.

Sadly, nobody is paying us a living wage to hang around in orbit. One day, hopefully, we will work in space. Until then, we make websites…

I’ve always had at least one foot planted in marketing – sometimes both feet and both hands. But for many years, my main focus was my career in IT and technical trainings. After moving to Canada, I embraced the freedom of trying out a variety of jobs for a while. (If you know me, you know I live for making new experiences…)

Back in 2017, I had no idea I’d be returning to marketing full-time. At the time, I was living the dream: organizing space camps for kids during the summer. We built cardboard rockets, crafted space helmets, learned about the challenges of living in low-gravity environments, and so on. One day, between astronaut fitness drills and building a cardboard planetarium, I clapped my hands and said, “Come on, my little almostronauts, let’s move on to the next thing!”

Meanwhile, I was building websites for artists and small businesses on the side. (I loved the space camp work, but it didn’t exactly cover all of the bills.) One of my clients convinced me to build a website for myself, and for that, I needed a business name.

I’ve been a space nerd ever since I turned a table upside down in the living room and went adventuring with my hand-drawn map of the solar system. So there was really only one name that came to mind.

Some of my family members had fairly smart feedback. “Don’t do it. Nobody will know what it means. You’ll have to spell your email address every single day.”

Buuuut… I decided that if it’s not fun, I don’t want to do it.

Of course, nowadays I teach classes on designing your brand around your business goals instead of your personal taste… 🙂

That said, I have zero regrets about starting the Almostronaut Creative (Space) Agency. It’s a great conversation starter, and it’s attracted some of the funnest, wittiest clients I could have hoped for. I work best with people who need a touch of humour or whimsy in their marketing – or in their life. And the same is true for the rest of our little team. So it’s all worked out beautifully.

From the bottom of my rocket-fueled heart, thank you to all my clients past, present, and future for being part of this wonderful journey.
