I don’t Believe in Competition
Focus on what's unique about your business.
Some industries are cutthroat, but small business doesn’t have to be. I’m not saying competition doesn’t exist; I just don’t think it’s the whole story. I don’t feel in competition with other local marketing businesses, at least not nearly to the degree that you would think. Here on the Island, with our mix of agencies, freelancers, and part-timers, think of it as less of a rivalry and more of an ecosystem.
Here’s why I don’t feel competitive with other local marketing businesses, and how collaboration works better than guarding territory.
We’re not the only ones here, and that’s fine
Some industries are more competitive than others, and maybe I’m just really lucky. But I don’t feel in competition with other local marketing businesses, at least not nearly to the degree that you would think.
Almostronaut Creative isn’t the only gig in town when it comes to websites, graphic design and marketing services. On Vancouver Island we have everything from big, established agencies to small teams to solopreneurs to part-time freelancers. Some try to offer a bit of everything and others are super specialized in one aspect of marketing.
We all have overlaps in what we offer, and with that come overlaps in who we offer it to.
But in reality, at least for us, there’s enough business going around.
Sure, I have to show up, stay visible, network, and keep my Google score clean, that’s just the cost of doing business. But it’s not like we’re all fighting over the same last client who needs a website. New businesses, nonprofits, and community projects pop up all the time.
And sure, sometimes a client will leave one firm for another – but that happens both ways.
Collaboration beats competition
What’s more important than what we have in common is what we don’t.
For example:
- I don’t enjoy fixing problems with Wix websites. But Lorrie from First Impressions is great at that.
- Lorrie told me that she’s not interested in vehicle wraps. But that’s something we love doing!
We met at a networking mixer this year, and instead of treating each other like rivals, we immediately decided to send each other referrals when the opportunity comes up. This way, everybody wins.
Lorrie also has the best leads on promotional items. (I think we all know how much of a challenge it can be to find a good provider for merch.) I know other local service providers that are fantastic at SEO but don’t offer graphic design, or are amazing at active email marketing specifically, or offer IT services that go above and beyond but need help with accessibility.
Even in a crowded field, you can stand out
Maybe your business is in a more saturated space. Let’s say you’re one of eight people selling 3D-printed dragons at the night market. You can still stand out: with bold signage, a fun giveaway, free candies, or a memorable display. You can still find something that’s not a dragon that grabs people’s attention and that sticks in their minds.
Your difference is the point
Something about your business is already different.
If it’s not the product, it might be your service.
If it’s not your service, it might be your personality.
And if it’s not your personality, we can come up with a unique hook for you 🙂
